But not Percy. Percy was scared of heights.

No, not just scared. Percy was terrified of heights. He had nightmares about climbing stairs.

Percy wanted to laugh, but it was against the rules for people to know that gargoyles were alive, so he kept very quiet.

The boy took a drink bottle out of his knapsack and started twisting the lid off. But the lid was stuck, and it wouldn’t budge, so the boy pulled harder and harder until POP! it flew off and smacked him right in the head!

“Stickboy!” boomed a voice from behind. Iain spun around and saw Graeme lumbering up the steps, eyes narrow with anger. “My mum’s furious at me for being suspended!”

Iain stumbled backwards. Percy ducked lower in the pack.

“From now on, sticky,” continued Graeme, “I’m going to take whatever I want out of your bag, whenever I like! And you’re not going to say a word about it, got it?”

Before Iain could react, Graeme scooped up the bag with Percy inside, and started shaking it upside-down.

“Let’s see what you’ve got in here!” he laughed.

“Graeme! Don’t do that! Please!”

Iain grabbed hold of one of the bag’s straps and started to pull.

“Let go, or you’ll be sorry!” Graeme snorted.

“It’s my pack, Graeme! Leave it alone!”

“Wrong!” yelled Graeme, “It was your pack! Now let go!”

Graeme pulled so hard that Iain lost his grip, and then Graeme and the knapsack tumbled backwards, right off the edge of the castle!

“Help!” shouted Graeme, dangling off the edge, “Somebody help!”

Iain tried to reach, but Graeme was too far down, barely holding on to the backpack, which was caught on the side of the roof!

Inside the pack, Percy was shivering with fear. He couldn’t look outside… it was too scary! He kept his eyes shut tight, and he thought about happy things… happy things like… like caramel pudding. And talking to Iain. And Iain telling him he could be brave.

He opened his eyes.

“I can be brave,” he said.

He jumped out of the pack with a mighty leap and grabbed hold of the side of the castle. With the other arm, he reached out to Graeme.

“Grab on to me!” he shouted.

Graeme looked at the gargoyle above him and nearly wet himself.

“Holy cucumber sauce! You’re a… a… a…”

“I’m the gargoyle who’s going to save your butt! Now hurry up!”

Graeme grabbed onto Percy’s hand, and with a mighty heave, the two of them flung themselves up and back onto the castle top!

“Percy!” Iain gasped, “that was amazing!”

Graeme got himself to his feet, face white as a ghost!

“You… you know this gargoyle?” he stammered.

“Percy is my friend,” Iain said proudly.

“I’m so sorry I was mean to you!” he bleated, “I’m so very, very, very sorry, Iain! Please don’t have your gargoyle eat me! Please!”

Iain frowned at Graeme, crossed his arms.

“Are you going to steal my lunch anymore?”

“No! I won’t! I promise!”

Iain thought for a moment.

“All right,” he said, “you’re safe. For now.”

Graeme ran down the stairs before anyone could say another word.

“You don’t want to eat him, do you?” Iain asked Percy.

“Yick,” said Percy, sticking out his tongue, “I’d rather eat dirty socks dipped in vinegar. He’s way too disgusting to eat.”

Every Saturday from that day on, Iain made a trip out to the castle to visit Percy. He brought cheesy sticks and apples and juice with the lid done up tight. For dessert, they had delicious caramel pudding. Six cups each.

And even though he was still scared of being up high, Percy didn’t mind sitting on the roof of the castle with his friend.

Because Percy was brave, and he knew it.
